BECCA: THE BREAST CANCER NOW APP

PROBLEM

More than 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in UK each year, increasing to more than 71,000 by 2035.
Most women expect to finish treatment feeling elated, but are often met with the anticlimax, physical and emotional pain of what comes next.
They lose the support of their NHS team, while friends and family expect them to 'ping' back to normal.

SOLUTION

A pocket guide to life after breast cancer. Becca has hundreds of content cards developed with users and experts that cover topics from diet and exercise to managing the fear of recurrence and dealing with menopausal symptoms, a side effect of the long-term hormone treatment many women receive.

IMPACT

30,000 downloads in year 1.

Winner of the Best Health Project in the National Lottery Awards 2018.

Winner of the User Engagement Award at thee BMA Awards 2019.

"The Becca app has helped me move forward after breast cancer by providing support in those difficult moments when I've needed it. It's informative, honest and healing."

MY ROLE

As Digital Content Strategist and then UX Manager, I lead on the testing and iteration strategy for Becca. I built an online user testing base of 1,000 women to test our beta web app, who became our product champions. I worked with the Programme Manager, Product Manager and Developer in a multidisciplinary team, embedding a user-centred approach to our work and bringing our users into the design at each point.
